Your Role as a Partner at Salem

One of the biggest advantages of a private school is how closely parents and teachers work together. At Salem, your involvement matters — and we make it easy.

Parent Teacher Club (PTC)

All parents are encouraged to participate in PTC. This group supports Salem through events, fundraising, and community building. PTC provides food for school parties, sponsors health programs, funds athletic equipment, subsidizes field trips, and much more.

It is a simple way to make a real difference in your child’s school experience.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are many ways to serve at Salem. Help in the classroom, chaperone field trips, volunteer at events, support athletic games, or assist with hot lunch. Every hour you give strengthens the school community your child is part of.

All volunteers must have a background check on file. Contact the school office to get started.

Fellowship Events

Throughout the school year, Salem hosts events for families to connect, build friendships, and enjoy the community. These gatherings are a big part of what makes a small private school feel like family.

Before & After School Care

SailorCare — Extended Day Program

SailorCare provides supervised care for students in grades K–8 after school from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM. The program is billed at $6.00 per hour in 15-minute increments — simple, flexible, and affordable.

Parent Resources — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions families ask about staying connected and involved at a private school.

What is the Parent Teacher Club (PTC)?

PTC is Salem's parent organization, and all families are welcome. It supports the school through events, fundraising, and community building. PTC funds things like athletic equipment, field trip subsidies, health programs, and school party food. It is a great way to get involved and meet other families.

Are parents more involved at a private school than a public school?

In most private schools, yes. At Salem, parent involvement is built into the culture—not treated as an afterthought. Our small size means you know the teachers, the staff, and the other families. Communication is personal and direct. You are a partner in your child's education, not a name on a mailing list.

Research consistently shows that strong parent-school partnerships lead to better academic results, stronger social skills, and higher student confidence.

How will I know if my child is struggling?

Our teachers notice early because of small class sizes and deep relationships. If your child is struggling academically, socially, or emotionally, we reach out to you before it becomes a bigger issue. We do not wait for report cards or scheduled conferences to communicate concerns.

You can also monitor grades and attendance in real time through the FACTS Parent Portal.

What if I have a concern about my child's experience at school?

Start with your child's teacher. At Salem, teachers are your first point of contact and they welcome honest conversations. If you need to take it further, our administration is responsive and accessible. We believe in resolving things early, directly, and respectfully.

How do I access grades and attendance online?

All parents have access to the FACTS Parent Portal. Through FACTS, you can view grades, attendance records, and school announcements at any time. Login credentials are provided at the start of the school year. If you need help, contact the school office.

Are there parent-teacher conferences?

Yes. Salem holds regular parent-teacher conferences throughout the year. But you do not have to wait for a scheduled conference. Teachers are available for a conversation whenever you need one. That kind of access is one of the key benefits of choosing a small private school.

How is parent involvement different at a private school vs. public school?

At a larger public school, parents often feel disconnected from daily school life. Communication can be impersonal and involvement opportunities limited. At Salem, the opposite is true. You know the teachers by name. They know your family. Conversations happen naturally — in the hallway, at pickup, or over a quick email.

Our small size means your voice matters and your involvement has a real impact on your child's experience.
